Cider Apple Harvest at Bowhayes Farm: The Fruits of Autumn 🍏🍂

Updated: Nov 7

There’s something magical about autumn at Bowhayes Farm. The air is crisp, the leaves are turning, and the orchard is full of life as we prepare for one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year: the cider apple harvest.

A Challenging Year

The year 2024 has been a particularly challenging one for us. A very late apple blossom and fewer pollinators meant we had to wait longer for the apples to develop. And just when we thought we were ready for harvest, October brought torrential rain, adding extra complexity to the process. Yet, despite the weather and the obstacles, we’re seeing a good crop—proof of the resilience of our trees and the dedication of our team.

The Harvest Process

At Bowhayes Farm, cider apple harvesting is a distinctive process using specialist mechanical equipment.

  • First, to shake the trees,

  • Second, sweeping the apples into neat rows ready for,

  • Third, the harvester to collect them.

Since these apples are destined for cider, they don’t go into crates but are instead stored on our ‘apple pad’ in a large mound. Timing is critical—within 48 hours of harvest, they’re loaded by tractor into an arctic bulk tipper (a large lorry!) and sent off to local cider makers in the southwest.

Three Varieties, Three Flavours

Our farm grows three main varieties of cider apples: Browns, Michelin, and Dabinett. Each brings something unique to the cider-making process. Browns apples add a sharp, zesty tang, Michelin offers a softer sweetness, and Dabinett is known for its rich, tannic qualities, ideal for crafting full-bodied ciders. This blend of varieties is what helps create the rich, complex ciders that the southwest is known for.

The Rhythm of Nature

Farming is about more than just work—it’s a way to connect with nature’s rhythms. This year especially has reminded us how unpredictable those rhythms can be. Yet, autumn at Bowhayes Farm is a time to reflect, celebrate, and enjoy the rewards of the hard work we've put in all year.
